Query Text:

Looking for the descendants of Joseph and Mary (Bonney) Kaler of Fulton County, Illinois. In a recent web search for my ancesters, I stumbled upon an old list of Jacksonville State Hospital patients, Jacksonville, IL. I learned that my 2nd Great-Grandmother, Mary (Bonney) Kaler, had been institutionalized in Oct 1854 and had died at the age of 35 on Christmas Eve., 1857. Mary was buried in an unmarked grave on the hospital grounds. The body wasn't claimed and no service held. I am hoping to find some answers. Possibly some of the descendants may have had the story passed down though the years, and could shed some light on what happened to Mary. I have since learned that, Mary's husband, my 2nd Great-Grandfather, Joseph F. Kaler Sr., would leave his family for years at a time to walk from Illinois to California and other areas in the U.S. Mary would have no means of support during this time. The children would often go hungry. The State of Illinois has sealed the records and we cannot even learn the cause of death at such a young age, or the reason for her hospitalization. My Great-Grandfather, Joseph Kaler Jr., would only have been eight years old when his mother was put in the hospital. It is quite possible the children may not have known where their mother went. None of the descendants of Joseph Kaler Jr. were aware of this until now. Mary Bonney was born 11 Sep 1822 in Ohio and died 24 Dec 1857 in Jacksonville, IL. She married Joseph Kaler Sr.in Fulton Co., IL. Joseph was born 16 Apr 1820 in Ohio, and died 1 Jan 1904 in Cuba,Fulton Co., IL. I would like to fill in the blanks for what happened to this family after their mother died so young. Did Joseph finish raising them? Did they go to live with family members? Why was Mary sent to a hospital? Many questions, and so few answers. Mary and Joseph had four children: Henry Hunter, Oscar, Joseph Franklin Jr. and Sarah. All were small when their mother went into the hospital. Of these children, in addition to Joseph Kaler Jr.'s descendants, I have located: 1. A record of death for Henry Hunter Kaler, who died in Fulton Co., on 21 Oct 1926, but no record of a marriage or family. 2. Oscar Kaler married Marian Quillen in Fulton Co., but no more could be found on him. 3. A Fulton Co. marriage record for Sarah Kaler to Isaac Johnson. There was no more to be found as to what happened to them, or if they had children. I do not have any dates of birth for the above three children, but I know they were all born in Fulton County, IL. If you are a descendant, or know anything of the whereabouts of descendants of Mary and Joseph or descendants of Mary's parents, Jarius Abijah and Irene (Larned) Bonney, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. If you have some suggestions as to how I could obtain some more information as to what caused Mary's death and the circumstances of her hospitalization, I would appreciate hearing from you.
