I am interested in the family of William C Colgate (1783) of the Colegates soap family. I know he had 4 brothers and was trying to find out if one of them was Joseph Colgate (1897) . Williams first son was Joseph, s it seems reasonable that they may be brothers. In 1840 Joseph lived in upstate New York, by 1850 he was living in Pike Co. Indiana . He is listed as a farmer and place of birth was England. Joseph had a son also Joseph who married Olive Burrington in Indiana . These paople lived in the area that later became Colgate Indiana. I know there is a Colgate manufacturing plant in Indiana and wondered if the town was named after this family or the soap company. This makes me wonder if they are the same family, I heard the Colgates farmed pigs to produce their soap, could some of the Colegates moved to Indiana because it was good Pig Country. My husbands Grandfather spelled the name Colegate but I found the records of his half brothers death and it is spelled Colgate. My husbands grandfather was Ocie Colegate , his father was Willard Colegate, Willard was Joseph Jr"s son. His mother was Opha Beadles, though at the time of Ocies birth Willard was married to Mary Williams.Anyone connected? Thank you Michelle | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
