Query: Who are William A. Linthicum’s (c1825 – 1877) parents; could they be John W. Linthicum (1801-1847) and Diana Causey (*-1842)? Assumptions: Besides having no other individual readily fitting my criteria in Guilford County, I’m investigating this individual very carefully because he has the same name and some of the affectations that I think to be true of my great-grandfather, John W. Linthicum as conveyed in family lore. In the 1850 Guilford County, Southern Division Census there are some younger Linthicums living with other families that could be John W. Linthicum (JWL) and Diana’s orphaned kids: On line 1625 with the Howrens, there is an Elizabeth, 52, who could be JWL’s sister, an Albert, 23 and a Daniel 21. On line 811 with the Coes, there is a John B. Linthecum, 16, who is probably apprenticed as a blacksmith. On line 1616 with the Wilsons, there is a Diana, 19. If William A. was the son of John W. Linthicum and Diana Causey Linthicum, he could have been emancipated at the time or shortly after the time of his father’s death and slipped through the cracks in the 1850 Census wherever he may have been at that time. Facts: William A. Linthicum is my great-great grandfather He first appears in the 1860 US Census in Pendleton County, KY married to Ellen Eades. My great–grandfather John W. Linthicum was born to William and Ellen in June of 1868. William and Ellen had other children: Caswell W. b 1860, Amanda b. 1864, Benjamin F. (Frank) b. 1870. William A. Linthicum is shown to be 31 on this Census so we could put his birth around 1829. The next records I found were his enlistment papers in January of 1865 when he enlists in the Ohio Volunteer Army near Cincinnati, OH. He is listed as 40, which would place his birth date around 1825? On these papers, he also states that he was born in Guilford County, NC. William A. Linthicum died as a pauper in 1877 and is buried in the English, IN Cemetery. From his obituary, we gather that he probably died of TB- that may have been contracted during his Civil War service and that he had been a preacher of some sort. Ellen applied for a Widow’s Pension in the years after William A. Linthicum’s death and the date of 12/16/1859 shown on this claim is the only record of their marriage that I’ve found. I have not a trace of him before these references. This John W. Linthicum - (that I am speculating may be my great-great-great grandfather and William A’s father) is the son of Sr. Daniel Linthicum-5 (Thomas Francis-4, Thomas Frances-3, Hezekiah-2, Thomas-1) as documented in a frequently referenced book, “Genealogy of the Linthicum and Allied Families” by Matilda P. Badger, which traces the Linthicum family roots back to Maryland in the 1600’s, however, there is some controversy as to whether Matilda has Daniel’s lineage correct. I will leave this challenge for the future. John W. has siblings Soloman, Richard, Daniel Jr., Christopher, and Elizabeth. John W. Linthicum married Diana Causey on March 25, 1823. Soloman J. Linthicum appears on the Guilford County marriage bond. There is a “John Lincicum” in the 1830 Census and a “Jno. Linthecum” in the 1840 Census for Guilford County, NC. In both instances the family tallies indicate a wife and children that could include William A. Diana Causey Linthicum’s death on 9/18/1842 is reported in the 9/24/1842 Greensboro Patriot. Her age is reported as 44, which fits into the brackets of the 1830 and 40 Census. John W. Linthicum’s death is reported in the 9/18/1847 Greensboro Patriot. He is memorialized as a frequently published contributor to the Greensboro Patriot. He was noted for his verse bemoaning the follies of the time and remembered by his nom de plume, “The Village Bard”. It was mentioned that he, no doubt, had much personal experience of the evils of the alcoholic spirit. A “memoir” in the minutes of the 2nd Quarterly Conference for the year 1848 of the Guilford Circuit of the Methodist Church gives John W. Linthicum’s birth date as 8/19/1801 and his date of death as 9/3/1847. Daniel Linthicum is shown as his father. It is also mentioned that that his wife preceded him in death and that there were orphans who are not listed by name. It is also noted how he overcame addiction to the evils of the spirit and dedicated his life to preaching against this and other evils. It appears that JWL died intestate (without a will) and his estate was subject to probate. There are two Guilford County Court documents dated November 15th? 1847 where a $200 and $500 bond are posted by those who will “see after” and “account for” JWL’s estate. There is a great deal of legal hocus pocus and an inventory dated February 1850 for JWL’s estate which shows no real property. The bottom line to this untrained observer is that there are no children or heirs named and perhaps the State and the lawyers are the only benefactors from JWL’s untimely and poorly planned demise. PLEA: If anyone has ever ventured down this rarely traveled path of Linthicum history and knows ANYTHING about John W. Linthicum, son of Daniel, Sr. and brother to the much more well-documented, Soloman J., please contact the writer-Terry L. Linthicum , 3700 S. Westport AVE, #1958, Sioux Falls, SD 57106, 520-237-1175, terry.l@mail.escapees.com I will be happy to reciprocate with any information I have. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
