I am researching my g-g-grandfather Nathan Lester Stevens/Stephens/Stevans, 1826, OH -1915, IN, who lists on the 1880 census that his father as born in PA . The father according to family tradition, was also named Nathan; Nathan Lester's mother was born in MD. The father may, however, been named James Stevens/Stephens from Fountain Co., IN. Nathan's father possible married a Lester. Nathan Lester Stevens may have had a sister Martha and relatives Sarah and Isace (sp?). Nathan Lester Stevens married in Montgomery Co., IN, in 1850 Mary Alice Woods, 1831,OH-1913, IN, and produced eight children: Lillian, 1867 (who married David Decker); Joseph M., 1851; Francis, 1859; twins Floyd & Lloyd, 1861; Delphene, 1855; Enoch 1866, John William, 1858. The family can be found in Tipton, Howard, Montgomery, Fountain, and Carroll counties in IN. A family story has it that Nathan Lester Stevens and Mary Alice journeyed with a large group of family members to Iowa, Page Co., in 1850/1 where John William was born; this is supported by 1880 census. In Iowa, according to the family story, one of Nathan's children died and he also lost two brothers. Nathan, Mary and their children returned to Indiana, the Kokomo, Howard County area where, because as Nathan is reputed to have stated, they "had left better farm land than what they had traveled over" in the trip. Mary Alice Woods, Nathan's wife, may have had some of her relatives travelling with the group. Her father was Joseph Woods, b. 1805,VA, and her mother was Sarah Fisher, b. 1804, VA. Sarah's parents were Jacob and Barbara Fisher, both buried in Highland Co., OH. Mary's sister Jane lived in Clarinda City, IA, and her brother Enoc, b. 1829, moved from IA Neosho Co., KS."
