Query Text:

I believe that I have identified my G-G-G-grandparents on the 1850 Claiborne County Federal Census as John and “Parmela” (this is misspelled and should have read “Permelia”) CROW living in District One. I am basing this on James M. CROW, 8, b. Miss who is living with them and presumably their son. James M. CROW was the brother of my G-G-Grandfather, Adrian Judson CROW, whom I know was born in Claiborne County in 1857. The 1900 Census indicates that James M. CROW was born in Mississippi in 1842. I expect that since that CROW family produced James M. in Mississippi in 1842 and Adrian Judson in Claiborne County, MS in 1857 – the family would have been residing in Mississippi in 1850. There are only 2 males on the 1850 Census of Mississippi who could be that James M. I have ruled out the other individual who was living in Attala County. I further believe that the names of my G-G-G-Grandparents were actually, “M. John CROW” (I have no idea what the “M” stands for, this is the only documentation in which he is so identified) and “Permelia IRBY” and that they were married in Jefferson County on 01 December 1827. It appears that there were quite a few marriages between CROW and IRBY surnamed individuals within Jefferson, Claiborne, Wilkinson and Adams Counties of Mississippi in the first half of the 19th Century. I do not know Permelia IRBY CROW’s parents. There are 2 CROW households enumerated on the 1850 Claiborne County Census Report. John and “Parmela” CROW of District One and John B. and Maria CROW of Grand Gulf. These families are undoubtedly connected (in fact I am not sure if John B. and Maria are not duplicated and enumerated in each district). The ages are very close, but Maria of District One is listed as having been born in Miss while the Maria of Grand Gulf is listed as having been born in Texas. I make the connection between these families based upon the presence of a young Courtney surnamed female in each of those two households. Mary E. Courtney, 6 lived with John and “Parmela-Permelia” in District One and Elizabeth Courtney, 5, lived with John B. and Maria in Grand Gulf. I suspect that these girls are a product of the marriage between Edney CROW and John A. Courtney, 3 April 1843 in Jefferson County. There is also a Benjamin F. “McNiece”, 12, living with John and “Parmela-Permelia” CROW. I suspect that this young man is connected to the CROW family through the marriage of Ellen CROW to George W. McNEECE in Claiborne County, on 24 DEC 1845, but I do not believe that Benjamin is the son of Ellen. Most likely he is a son of George W. McNEECE from a previous marriage. There are also two Stevenson surnamed men living with John B. and Maria and I suspect that this Maria’s maiden name was also Stevenson. They are listed as having been born in Texas. I have heard a story that two Claiborne County boys joined Jefferson Davis’ Mississippi Rifles to fight in the Mexican War and that one of them brought home a “mestizo” or Mexican bride from Texas. Could, one of the two Maria CROW’s on this Census possibly be a female with some Mexican ancestry. The Texas connection is important in that my family history states that Adrian Judson CROW and brother, James M. CROW traveled to Texas after the Civil War. The book, Bee County Texas Bicentennial” reports that “Jud Crow arrived in the 60’s (1860’s) along with Doc Clark and his grist mill”. There was a Clark CROW, 52, b. Miss, living with the John B. and Maria CROW household in the 1850 Census. Can you shed any information on my IRBY-CROW connection of Jefferson and Claiborne Counties? Regards, Richard Crowe Escondido, CA rpcrowe@direcway.com
