I want to find out about the life of my great great grandmother, Elizabeth A. Barnes. When and where was she born? Who were her parents? She married James Hollister Dufur, 20 Nov 1859, Menard Co, Ill. and was divorced by him on April 1865. (James marries again to Augusta Lancaster on 12 Nov 1865, in Menard Co). The divorce papers I have accused Elizabeth of having a child by Barnabas Thorp while James was fighting in the Civil War. What happened to her after her divorce? I also have copies of 2 subpoenas that were issued to William and Nancy A. Brewer to appear on behalf of James to testify for him and against Elizabeth. Are the Brewers a clue? (It appears she never showed up in court). Were the Brewers mutual friends that knew of the circumstances? What was her new child's (his/her) name? Did she marry again? If so, to whom? Did she have other children? Where/when did she die? Any accounts of her life? What does a young mother do who gets herself into trouble by having a baby with another man while her husband is off to war, is divorced by him when he returns, is publically charged with adultery in the divorce papers, loses her 4 year old boy William Thomas Dufur to her former husband James, has no job, no husband, no income, plus the new baby to raise? I found over 3,000 "Elizabeth Barnes" in Illinois in the 1860 federal census and don't have any info to tie any of them to her, except a marriage and a divorce date. The marriage certificate and divorce papers have no info about her except her name. It's like the old needle in a haystack. I'm hoping someone else is descended from her and knows something about her life. I'd love to hear from you. The survival skills of our ancestors was incredible and very inspiring. Elizabeth is a case in point. I'm hoping she recovered from where my account of her ends. Thanks. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
