The Family of James Charles Burns (1825 - 1901) Seeking info on this man and his wife and their family of eleven children. James Charles (called Charlie) Burns, was born on 17 Feb 1825 in Washington Co., FL. I know that Charlie Burns' father was named Anthony Burns, and his grandfather was named John Burns, and his great-grandfather was named Bartholomew John Burns. I believe his great, great grandfather may have been named Bartholomew Burns, and that he may have been the one to bring the family to the USA from Scotland. Charlie Burn's mother was supposedly named Elizabeth Ann, but I do not know her last name. His paternal grandmother may have been named Elizabeth Malpass. Charlie Burns married Rebecca Ann Hamilton, who was born on 06 Sep 1833 in AL, and they had eleven children together. Their children and their birthdates were as follows: George Wesley Burns, born 07 Sep 1851 in FL; Anthony Burns, born abt. 1854 in FL; Eliza Jane Burns, born 28 JUL 1855 in AL; Sarah Burns, born abt. 1857 in AL; Mealitha D. Burns, born abt. 1860 in AL; William W. Burns, born Abt. 1862 in AL; Charles L. Burns, born abt. 1864 in AL; Allen D. Burns, born Abt. 1868 in AL; Susan C. Burns, born abt. 1872 in AL; James W. Burns, born 06 Oct 1873 in AL; and, Rebecca A. Burns, born 1876 in AL. Charlie fought in the War Between the States, and a family legend says he had to walk home after the war ended. He may even have fought at Gettysburg, per that same legend. Was he a POW, or just a soldier whose unit was very far north when the conflict ended? I am seeking info on his military service record for the Confederacy. One of my cousins thinks he fought with a unit from Florida. Charlie died on 16 Feb 1901 in Geneva Co., AL. Rebecca died on 22 Sep 1917 in Geneva Co., AL. Charlie and Rebecca are buried in the Burns' Assembly of God church cemetery, which is located in-between Malvern and Slocomb in rural Geneva County, AL, on County Road 30. Some of their children and grandchildren are also buried there. I have some information on four of the eleven children, but have the most on Eliza Jane Burns, as she was my paternal grandmother. Eliza Jane Burns (d. 02 JUN 1933 in Malvern, Geneva County, AL), whose name is sometimes given as "Elisa" and sometimes with and sometimes without the "Jane", married John Drayton Pullum (1853-1936) in January, 1876, and they had ten children together. They lived with their two oldest children and JDP's younger brother, Thomas S. Pullum, whom the Census called "Tomasso", near Brundidge in Pike Co., AL per the 1880 Census. They eventually settled in Malvern in what is now the eastern end of Geneva County, AL. JDP and Eliza and several of their children and grandchildren are buried in the Clark Cemetery, which is located in-between the town of Taylor and the community of Brannon Stand on County Road 59 in the western end of what has been part of Houston County, AL since 1903. Besides info on Charlie's ancestors and his war record, I am very much interested in receiving info on his descendants down to the current ones. I also know nothing about Rebecca Ann Hamilton's parents, etc., but would like to learn. I am willing to trade info on the Pullum family for this if anyone is interested in us. I may be reached in any of the following ways directly: Rev. Larry Fleming Pullum 3638 CR 203 Rehobeth, AL 36301-7726 (334) 677-3800 e-mail: Larfpul@yahoo.com Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to render me in my various and sundry searches! -- LFP
