My great great great great grandfather was Henry Steer, born in 1779 near Kingbridge, Devon, England. In 1803 he married Ann Rich who was born 1774 and died 1852. Both died in New York City USA. Henry Steer learned ship building as an apprentice ( for 7 years - L 200 being paid ) for Newman of New Quay. After the apprenticeship he worked in the Royal Dockyard at Plymouth until 1815 when he and his family moved to the Isle of Guernsey. There he built two ships for the French Government ( actually family history says the ships were built for smugglers ) These ships were built based on plans he drew up in 1805 while working as a journeyman. In 1819 a friend , John Thomas, with whom Henry worked with while at the Plymouth Dock Yards and who had traveled to find work in Washington, D.C. USA wrote and invited Henry to come to the USA.. Henry came with his wife - 2 sons ( Henry Torring and James Rich - my great great great grandfather and 2 daughters. It is during this time our family name changed from Steer to Steers- Henry and Ann had a total of 13 children of whom only one daughter -Ann stayed back in England In 1824 the family ( now called Steers ) left Washington DC.and came with John Thomas to New York City to build a marine railway. One of Henry's sons - George born in 1820 at Washington D.C. became the most famous of all the clan when he built the Yacht America (of America's Cup fame) in 1851 winning the famous race at Cowes. Nobody seems to remember when the S was added to the Steer name to change it to Steers Thanks ever so much for any help that you can give me Henry Steers III | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
