BROOKS : DINKINS : KORNEGAY : PARKER : SHERARD

Query Text:

Henrietta M M Dinkins arrived in Marengo County, Alabama, about 1850. Census records of that time list her residing with Elizabeth Brooks (possibly her maternal grandmother),her cousins, Emma Brooks annd Amarintha Brooks, and John Vary, an attorney and suitor of Amarintha. Henrietta was eighteen years old and her occupation was listed as "teacher". Her journey from Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina is unrecorded. Elizabeth Brooks, her maternal grandmother, mother of Amanda Lenoir Brooks, probably invited Henrietta to reside with her following the death of Amanda, Henrietta's mother in Sumter County, South Carolina. The date of her death is believed to be about 1838. Henrietta's age at that time was six years old. Who raised Henrietta after the death of her mother. Mississippi records of Holmes County indicate that William Wright Dinkins remarried and raised a large family by his second wife. Questions arise as to why Henrietta's name is conspicuously absent from his lineage. Another question brought about is the obvious disinterest of William Wright Dinkins in Henrietta. Henrietta married Napoleon Bonaparte Sherard in 1854 in Sumter County, Alabama. Her husband's unexpected death between 1858 and 1860 forced her to raise her children on the plantations belonging the Marcus Parker and Joseph Arrington Jr. Why didn't her own father intercede? Her daughter, Julia A Sherard married Alonso Kornegay, and was widowed about 1879. Henrietta, Julia and her children, moved to Meridian, Lauderdale, Mississippi, about that same year. What role did Henrietta's father and his second family play in these difficult times. This mystery is unsolved. Anyone who may know the answers to these questions and can provide any detail is certainly most welcome.
