Query Text: |
Seeking ancestors and family of Benjamin HAMILTON, b. abt 1835 in Rochester, NY. His older brother William Morgan Hamilton was b. 1830 in Detroit. The family moved to Indianapolis. His brother Arthur was born in NY in 1833. Benjamin served in the Civil War on the Union side with an Indiana regiment. Married Editha H. Smith (nee Hockersmith) 10 Nov 1864. They had several children, including Thomas Benjamin HAMILTON, born in Indianapolis, IN in 1867. Benjamin and Editha Hamilton moved their family to Colorado Co, TX in the 1870's, where they farmed for a few years. By 1886 they were living in Indianapolis again, when their daughter Mae/May was born. By 1910 they had followed their son Thomas Benjamin to Houston. Their grown son John and daughter May were living with them in 1910. There are three versions of Benjamin's parents' birthplaces: both parents born in NY (his 1880 census); father born in NY and mother in Canada-English (his 1910 census); and both parents born in Canada (Arthur's 1880 census notes.) There's a strong likelihood, then, that their parents were descendants of Loyalists who went to Canada after the American Revolution. Four Hamilton men served with the King's Royal Regiment of NY and were resettled in Canada after the war. I have not yet found the direct connection but am working on it. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
