Jasper Miller, my great-grandfather, was born in Cleveland County, NC, on January 30, 1855. His parents were Eli Alexander Miller and Mahulda Warlick Miller. Eli was born on the old Miller homestead, about 9 miles from Shelby,NC.His parents were also born in that area. Eli's great-grandfather, ws a native of Belfast, Ireland, but of Scottish ancestry, who came to America before the Revolutionary War by way of Charleston,SC. On the Warlick side, Jasper's mother's family came from Germany in colonial days and settled in Pennsylvania...They migrated to Virginia into NC and settled in Lincoln County in 1760. Absolam Warlick was Mahulda's grandfather..who is recorded to have built the first cotton mill south of the Potomac River. Itr was located in Lincoln County, on the South Fork of the Catawba River, where a mill has been at least since the printing of this information in the 1920's. Associated with Mr. Warlick in the building of this mill was a Mr. Michael Schenck and the firm's name was Schenck and Warlick... Jasper Miller, after graduating from Wake Forest college, was in business w/ his half-brothers, James, John, and David Oates in Charlotte,NC. In 1878 he married Mary (Minnie) Fair Howell. In 1898 he moved to Columbia,SC, where he was in partnership with his brothers, George and Charles Miller, establishing the firm of Miller Brothers, which was the first organization to engage in the cotton business on a large scale in Columbia, and is credited w/ being the means of developing that city into the largest cotton operating city in SC and one of the greatest cotton centers of the South.. Jasper Miller organized and was president of the Columbia Railroad and was responsible for developing a residential area known as "Columbia Heights"... Later he moved back to Charlotte, NC, where he established another cotton business known as Jasper Miller and Son Company. Jasper and Minnie had 5 children: Lawrence Miller who married Miss Annie Lee Blair of Charlotte; Harriet who married Overton L. Watts); Minnie Belle who married Otis Kerr Asbury (my grandparents); Mary Harrison Miller; Carrie Louise Miller; and Stephen Miller.
