Basil Ransom Bradford, was born 1/29/1794, in Anderson South Carolina and died 12/17/1884. He is buried in Marengo Co. AL., In 1814, when he was only 20 years old, and residing in Georgia, he fought in the War of 1812 as a member of the Putnam County, Georgia militia. He moved to Marengo County with his parents Mary Hargraves and Thomas Bradford several years after the war ended. Shortly before his death, the Marengo Co.,AL census, lists his occupation as a farmer but he appears to have been involved heavily in land acquistion and land trading as well as appraising; in addition to working as a farmer. Records show that during his lifetime, he invested in "bounty land" through land patents, in Georgia, Florida and California and also that he directly acquired 13 federal land grants in Marengo Co., AL. The first grant occurred in 1825 and was made by John Quincey Adams, this was followed by grants in 1835 by Andrew Jackson, in 1837 by Martin Van Buren, in 1852 by Millard Fillmore, in 1860 by James Buchanan, and in 1862 by Abraham Lincoln. In 1909, after his death, William McKinley made a final land grant to the Bradford family. Total land acquired was approximately 4,000 acres. Bazil married twice. His first wife, Ann Hosea (1814-1839) migrated to Marengo Co in 1830. They were married in 1834 when he was 40 years old. Ann gave birth to four children, 3 sons and 1 daughter, during their short marriage which ended in her untimely death in 1839. The year she gave birth to two children, who were not twins. Thomas Hosea was the oldest son of this union. After Ann's death, Bazil married Talitha Denton and they had nine children. It can be conjectured from the names of his children that Basil was not very imaginative and that he must have been a religious man because his sons were named Tom, Dick and Harry, as well as Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. After his death, Talithia drew a widow's pension from Basil's service in the War of 1812. Brazil Ransom is buried in the family cemetery in Marengo Co., AL.
