What happened to Hershel AXE? Son of George W. & Mary (ROSE) AXE, he enlisted from Porter County, IN as a Pvt. in E Co, 183d IN Hvy Arty Reg, 10 Oct 1864, & transferred to D Co, 48th IN Inf Reg 19 Oct 1864 as a substitute. He didn't increase in rank. He mustered out in Louisville, KY 15 Jul 1865 & returned to Valparaiso, at least briefly, because newspaper abstracts ca. April 1866 list a letter being held for him at the post office. What happened to him? He isn't listed in the 1870 or any other subsequent census or in either of his parents' obituaries. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
