My family surnames are Allen/Pettiford/ Pulley/Mills/Hedgepeth. I am seeking information on if my ancestors may have been put in service for the Confederacy war effort in any manner or in any capacity. My known ancestors from that period would be: Monroe "Doc" Pettiford, Dora Pulley, and Frances Mills Pettiford. My surnames would perhaps reflect mixed heritage people or cultural isolates during that era. Has anybody done any research in ethnic participatiion in service in various functions? A specific area of concern for me would be the Nash County, Eastern North Carolina area and its participation in the war. This was the "anchor" area for my kinsmen. Anyone that can tell me of the manner in which mixed-heritage people may have been put in service to southern war efforts in Eastern North Carolina, please contact me. Thanks.
