He was wounded 05 Nov 1854 in the Battle of Inkerman during the Crimean War & received the Crimean Medal with clasps for Alma (20 Sep 1854) & for Inkerman (5 Nov 1854), as well as the Turkish Medal. His wife was a nurse during the Crimean War. Both William COWIE & Margaret COWIE (maiden name Margaret CHALMERS) died before 1874 (in Scotland?) Their daughter, Margaret Jane COWIE, b. 29 Jan 1849 in Aston, Warwickshire, England, married John Duncan GALL (1849-1881) in Cambusbarron, St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland, where Margaret Jane COWIE was a domestic servant.
