Hi am trying to trace my great grandfather. In an old book on West Virginia history, it says WD Rains (I was given his name as William D. Raines) born in 1863 (that part's right)to Phoebe Helmick in Pendleton County West Virginia no father listed. It said that WD went by the name of Billy Barlow, although how you get Barlow or Rains out of Helmick beats me. I am thinking he was born out of wedlock maybe?
