More history on James and Ellen Wall and families. I never dreamed that I would be able to put together these life histories on the Wall children. I didnïÿýt even know all their names until a few months ago. All of a sudden the information flooded my life. Remember the motto is, ïÿýnever give upïÿý and when you hit a ïÿýblankïÿý or a ïÿýWALLïÿý, turn around and try another lane or WALL. It works! ......Randy Wall, Minnesota We now know of nine children of James and Ellen Wall. In James Wallïÿýs will, he states he has five daughters (so we assume that he is talking about living daughters). Three of the daughters were unmarried. He mentions those three by name so they will get a little more out of his estate; Susan, Jane, and Margaret. He does not mention the two living married daughters by name, but after a lot of research from many different angles and records we know who they were now; Mary Wynn and Ellen Scott. James also had at least two sons, Henry and Isaac, and they are mentioned in the will. And lastly, he mentions a granddaughter, Ellen Dezell (she is the daughter of Ann.). We found the name Peter Scott, who turns out to be a son-in-law, mentioned in the will as executor. Peter was married to Ellen Wall. Another executor, John Griffith, is a land owner next to his farm and a life long friend. The will was drawn up on Oct. 7th, 1845, because James and Ellenïÿýs daughter, Ellen Scott, was moving away with her family and James wanted a will ïÿýdrawn upïÿý before they left Lanark County to go west in Ontario (Perth County). There is STRONG evident that the maiden name for Ellen Wall, Jamesïÿýs wife, was also Wall. From the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, Canada: A researcher states: I do not think we can "conclude" that the maiden name of Ellen Wall was Wall. We could say that there is a probability that it was. I notice in looking through the Wall entries in the Perth (Lanark County) registers that it was the practice of the priest of the time to give the maiden name of the mother in his baptismal entries. That gives support to the probability that Ellen Wall's maiden name was Wall. There are three entries for children of James Wall and his wife Ellen that I could easily find. The first is for Margaret and the second is for Susan where the parents are named James Wall and Ellen Wall; and the third is for Jane where the parents are recorded again as James Wall and Ellen Wall. These entries above are all of the same family and the probability is that Wall is Ellen's maiden name. The children of James and Ellen Wall: ***1. Ann Wall was born 1811ca in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, Ireland and came with her parents to Ontario, Canada in 1819. She married James Dalzelland (Dezell) before 1834. Ann died shortly after her daughter Ellen was born on Feb 12, 1834 in Beckwith Township, Lanark Co. Ellen was baptized on Feb. 25th, 1834 and was still living in 1845 (info from James Wallïÿýs will). James Dalzelland sailed for 17 weeks to Ottawa, Canada from Ireland. His parents were Alexander Dalzell (born 1875 Scotland) and Mary Smith. The Dalzell family was originally from Scotland. They moved their family to Ireland around 1820. Ann is most likely buried in the Vandusen Cemetery, Montague Twp, Lanark County, with her parents. ***2. Mary Wall was born in 1813 in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, Ireland and came with her parents to Ontario, Canada in 1819. She married Christopher Wynn. Mary died on Dec. 6th, 1860 and is buried in the Vandusen Cemetery, Montague Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, in the Wall plot with her parents, James and Ellen Wall. Her grave is well marked. We found out that there was a church at the Vandusem Cemetery at one time; the Vandusen Congregation Methodist Church. Of course it is gone today. We feel certain that Maryïÿýs parents James and Ellen and possible her brother Henry, are also buried there but do not have a gravestone. Children of Mary Wall and Christopher Wynn: - Ellen Wynn-She was born Sept. 28th, 1842, in Montague Twp and died Dec. 24th 1920, Matilda Twp, Dundas County, Ontario. She was married to William Adams (he was the local blacksmith in Matilda) and both are buried in the Hanesville cemetery and their graves are well marked. They had 4 children. Remember, the old saying, ïÿýdonïÿýt let the barn door hit youïÿý, WELL it did to Ellen and she was killed when the barn door slammed shut and hit her during a wind storm. Really! - James Wynn, born Jan. 17th, 1846, Kilmonek Twp, Grenville County, Ontario and died on June 1st, 1923. He married Margaret Knowles. They had 6 children. - Margaret Wynn, born 1853, Matilda Township, Dundas County and died Dec. 19th, 1882, Matilda Twp. Found her marriage record to Mr. Erastus Steinburg, age 24, son of John and Margaret Steinburg; married Margaret Wynn, age 22, daughter of Christopher Wynn & Mary Wall. Date of marriage: Nov 30th, 1875, Morrisburg, Dundas County, Ontario. Then we found a marriage for a daughter of this couple: Simon Alexander Barkley, 29, son of Simon & Lucy Barkley, married Ida May Steinburg, age 17, daughter of Erastus Steinburg & Margaret Wynn; witnesses: Isaac & Ellen (Millar) RYLANCE, at Matilda on Feb 16th, 1898, at Iroquois. Ellen (Millar) Rylance (Rilance) and Margaret (Wynn) Steinburg are first cousins. Ellenïÿýs mother was Susan Wall and Margaretïÿýs mother was Mary Wall; Wall sisters. Christopher Wynn, Mary Wallïÿýs husband, was born in Ireland in 1814, and died in Matilida Twp, Dundas County, Ontario on Sept. 15th, 1886, and is buried in the Hanesville Cemetery, Matilda Twp, Dundas County, with his children. Mary was taken back and buried with her father James Wall; her mother Ellen was still alive in 1860. Or perhaps Mary was visiting home that winter and died. She lived in Dundas County, which in those days was a long way from home and Mary was not buried in the winter time. They had no way to thaw out the ground. I was told that they did not even plow the roads. Everybody used their horses and sleigh with which to travel. ***3. Henry Wall born 1820/21, in Beckwith, Lanark County, Ontario and died after 1861, Montague Township, Lanark County, Ontario. 1861 census tells us he is single (he never married) and a labourer. On the land that Henry was supposed to get from his fatherïÿýs will, he never got it. It was signed over to an Anthony Tyndel and Rebecca (maiden name of Watchorn) Tyndel, Feb 16th, 1855, and then sold it to a James Burrows in March 25th, 1870 for a hundred pounds. Was the land signed over in 1855 because of back taxes or debts? ***4. Ellen Wall was born 1820/21 (could Henry and Ellen be twins?) at Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. She married Peter Scott on Dec. 12th, 1843, in Montague Township (Peter was from Scotland, was first married to Margaret Douglas and had three children before Margaretïÿýs death; Robert, Donald and James). In 1846 Peter and Ellen, moved west in Canada to North Easthope Township, ïÿýHuron Districtïÿý, Perth County, Ontario. Their farm was located between the villages of Hampstaed and Lisbon and near the Nith River. Ellen is pictured here in a few photos, by herself and in another with Susan Wall, taken after 1856, when tin types were invented. (Ellen died in 1862.) Pictures could have been taken in Smith Falls, Lanark Co. at the time of the funeral of their sister, Mary Wynn. Mary died in December of 1860, but her funeral was not until the spring of 1861. This would give Ellen enough time to get home to attend the funeral and see the family. Peter and Ellen had 9 children; John Henry, William, Peter, Margaret Ann, Ellen, Isaac, Alexander, Isabella and James Wall Scott. Peter Scott was also an executor for James Wallïÿýs will, Ellenïÿýs father, in 1845. The last child born to Peter and Ellen was named James Wall Scott (born Feb. 15th, 1862) after Ellenïÿýs father, James Wall. She died shortly after giving birth to him in 1862, as we have been told by family. No church, death or burial records were found. Peter died on Oct. 17th, 1888. Ellen and Peter are buried in the family plot at Hampstead, Hampstead Cemetery, North Easthope Township. Pictured are the Scott family around 1870 with Peter Scott, Ellen Wallïÿýs husband, in middle with his hand on James Wall Scott. The Hampstead church is across the road from the cemetery. The graves are not marked and are about 15 feet away from the brick tool shed on the property (see picture). A lot of this valuable information above was from Peter Scott, a descendant, from Victoria, British Columbia. He has placed his family history in a book titled, ïÿýScott-In Highland Traditionïÿý, 1832-1986. It is a wealth of information on this family of the Scottïÿýs mentioned here. ***5. Margaret Wall was born on February 18th, 1823, at Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario and baptized on March 23rd, 1823 at St. James Church of the town of Perth. She married William Riddle of Perth, on Nov. 6th, 1845, by Rev. Michael Davy (witnesses John Riddle and James Wall, the fathers of the couple). Margaret died on January 21st, 1850, and is buried at Old Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery - Lot 13, Con. 9, Ramsay Twp., near Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario. Her grave is well marked. I found a transcription of the stone-ïÿýIn Memory of Margaret Wall, wife of Wm. Riddell, who died Jan 21, 1850, aged 27 yrs. Also their infant son, died Dec 24, 1847.ïÿý They had another child and I found a marriage record for him; -James William Riddell; parents William Riddell and Margaret Wall married on Jan. 1st, 1869, to Catherine Patterson; parents were William Patterson and Catherine McGregor, at Almonte (Lanark County) St. John's United Church. ***6. Susannah (Susan) Wall was born on May 5th, 1825 (it states 1823 on her gravestone) and baptized on July 6th 1825, at Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario. She died on Sept. 1st, 1914, at Cardinal, Grenville County, Ontario and is buried at Hanesville Cemetery, Matilda Township, Dundas County, Ontario. Here is a picture of Susan dated January 2nd, 1903. She was married twice; first in 1847 to James Salter, born 1828 in Beckwith Twp and died on March 8th, 1854 at Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario. Susan and James Salter had 3 children: - William born Feb. 15th, 1848, Montague Twp, Lanark Co., and died Aug. 17th, 1923, Fort Frances, Ontario. He married Martha Edwards on May 6th, 1873. They had 4 children: William (Jim), Bertha, Ethel Mary, and Florence. (Pictured here.) Found family members today at Fort Frances. - Eleanor born May 1850, Perth Co, Ontario, died 1854. - Mary Jane born July 24th, 1852, Rochester, NY, and died Nov. 13th, 1922, Calgary, Alberta. She married John Milligan on May 3rd, 1869. They had 14 children: William James (died young), Mary Jane (Jennie), Annie, Edith, Esther Ellen, Robert, Susan Eleanor (Ellen), John Lowry, William Thomas, George Frederick, Florence Margaret (Maggie), Ethel Annie, Effie, and William James. A living descendant of Mary Jane, George Jones of Wingham, Huron County, Ontario, is descended from two Wall sisters. George has traced his heritage to two sisters of Isaac Wall, however, until 2005, when I contacted him; George knew nothing about the existence of Isaac Wall. But George did know about two Wall sisters, Susan & Ellen. George has told us that the grandson of Susan Wall and the granddaughter of Ellen Wall married each other on Sept 1st, 1909 in Rockwood, Manitoba, Canada (Susan (Wall) Salterïÿýs grandson, Robert Milligan, married Ellen (Wall) Scottïÿýs granddaughter, Ida Ellen Scott). George has collected a lot of his family history and was thrilled to share stories with us. Susan Wallïÿýs second husband was James Millar (born in Ireland 1807 and died June 20th, 1894) and they were married on April 3rd, 1859, Matilda Township, Dundas County. (James Millar was first married to Mary Jane Johnston, born in Ireland and died in 1857. They had 8 children; Elizabeth, William, Christopher, Thomas, Jane, Alexandra, Mary & James. Susan and James Millar had 3 children: - Isaac Millar; born in 1860, and died in 1861. - Frank Ernest Millar; born in 1861, and died in1862. - Ellen Mae Millar (Miller) was born on Oct. 11th, 1862, married on April 12th, 1883 to Isaac Mintoft Rilance (born on Jan. 16th, 1857 and died on Feb 23rd, 1935 at Portland, Oregon). Ellen died on April 23rd, 1930, at Portland, Oregon. Ellen & Isaacïÿýs children: William, James, Jack (John), Ernest, Arthur and Raymond. Susan is buried with her second husband, James Millar. The grave is well marked. The picture of the grave stone monument was taken before hoodlums toppled Susanïÿýs stone. Ron Shannon & Randy Wall have paid to have it reassembled and then lifted back into place. ***7. Jane Wall was on born Oct.17th, 1827, and baptized on Jan. 20th, 1828, at Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario. She married John Price about 1850 in Lanark County. When Isaac Wall presented the will of James Wall, his father, John Price was listed as in the presence of the signing (present at signing was Charles Vandusen and John Price). John went to Manitoba with two of his sons (George and Eli) and died there in Aug 26th, 1915 in Treherne, Manitoba after his wifeïÿýs death. Jane Wall and John Price had 8 children George Henry, Ellen, Mary Ann, Nelson, Margaret, Lucy, Eli and Isaac. Pictured here are Mary Ann, Lucy and Ellen. Pictured here are three daughter; Mary Ann Hornibrook, Lucy Phillips, and Ellen Stewart. Jane and John's first four children were born at Smiths Falls, the rest at Matilda, Dundas County, Ontario. They then moved to Kent County and then Parry Sound District, both places in Ontario. They were in Matilda, Dundas County from 1860 to at least 1863. Perhaps this is what brought Isaac Wall down there from Lanark County to live. In 1861 John and Jane (Wall) Price, were in Matilda and lived two doors away were Christopher and Mary (Wall) Wynn; Mary was Jane's sister. Again, Isaac Wall had all this family living in Matilda, so he moved there as well? It does explain why he moved to a new area in this part of Ontario; to be closer to his family. He had three sisters there: Mary, Susan, and Jane. Jane (Wall) Price died on November 16th, 16, 1891 in Sundridge, Parry Sound District, Ontario and is buried in Sundridge Cemetery (old one), Strong Township. She has a grave stone (pictures here). The information above is from Melvin Kennedy, from Sundridge, Ontario, Canada. ***8. Rebecca Wall, born Sept. 6th, 1830, Beckwith Twp. The record from the Diocese of Ottawa read as follows; ïÿýRebecca, born Sept. 6th, 1830 ïÿýBaptized same dayïÿýparents: James and Ellen Wall of Beckwith Townshipïÿý (same place as where the other children were born and registered). Wayne Kinion also found this record of a child named Rebecca, for James and Ellen Wall. With all of their other children, the ceremony for the baptismal was always later on. Never on the same day. I know the Catholics do this but these Wallïÿýs were NOT Catholic. They were Church of England. Rebecca Wall was fighting for her tiny life and James saw it was slipping away and he ran somewhere or he jumped on his horse and got a minister of any faith to come (as they all do in time of need) to his farm and see to it that his little girl was baptized. We have no other record of Rebecca Wall. ***9. Isaac William Wall born on July 13th, 1833, and baptized on Sept. 22, at Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario and died on March 9th, 1920, Jolley, Calhoun County, Iowa, USA. See the books about his life; ïÿýThe Wall Family of Canada and Iowaïÿý by Wayne and Bonnie (Wall) Kinion, 1991 and ïÿýThe Book of Wallsïÿý by Randy Calvin Wall, 2002. Isaac had three wives and 17 children. 13 reached adulthood. Two children stayed in Canada and the rest came to Iowa but one returned. Isaac and his wives are listed at the end of this article. Found in the local newspaper Published in Lanark County, Ontario. Bathurst Courier (Perth Courier later on), December 12, 1856- -Profane Swearing: Isaac Wall, two shillings (What did he say? DARN? DAM?) Also this: On the Lordïÿýs Day, December 14, 1856- Assault: (was he fighting again?) Isaac Wall, five shillings (Good grief, you know that Irish temper.) Now, on the land from his fatherïÿýs will: The property that Isaac was to have gotten upon his mother's death, it looks like he and his mother just sold it for a seven hundred dollars for one section of land then later on sold another section for seven hundred for the other half on Aug. 8th, 1864. Isaac then moved down to Malitda Twp in Dundas County before 1865. Where did his mother Ellen go? Where was Henry Wall? There are life bioïÿýs and family histories about these folks listed below in the Wayne and Bonnie (Wall) Kinionïÿýs book, ïÿýThe Wallïÿýs of Canada and Iowa,ïÿý 1991. So I did not repeat that information, but just list by name the children of Isaac William Wall below. I did find some new information on a few of the children, which Iïÿýll add here. +++1. Isaac's first family with Sarah Tiffin. - James Isaac Wall, 3/17/1853 - 9/7/1916. - Ann Elizabeth Wall, 12/1/1854 - 9/22/1940. - Ephraim Arthur Wall, 3/20/1857 - 6/6/1931. - William Henry Wall, 8/2/1859 - 6/18/1861. The middle name for this child above was recorded as Fred in earlier records. I found his baptismal record: William Henry Wall, baptized Aug 2 1859, Montague, son of Isaac Wall and Sarah, Methodist Rideau Circuit. There is strong evidence that the grandfather of Isaac Wall could have been named William or Henry. These folks were following the naming patterns of naming their child after parents and grandparents and so on. - Isaac William Wall Jr, 8/1/1861 - 10/12/1930 The child above died and Isaac Wall (the father) used the name William as a middle name for this child. I have included the naming process that they used back then at the end of this list. Found death certificate of Isaac and he died at Trout Creek (Perry Sound Dist.) burial at Union Cemetery, Trout Creek, Ontario. Trout Creek is a small town located on Highway 11 in Northern Ontario, 12 kilometres south of Powassan, Ontario. The town is in the eastern end of the District of Parry Sound. Actual death record: WALL. Isaac, married, when: Oct. 12, 1930, age 68 years, Born Montague Township, Lanark County, Ontario, cause: cerebral hemorrhage-3 days in hospital, occupation: labourer, burial at Union Cemetery, Trout Creek, Parry Sound District, Ontario, son of Isaac Wall, & Sarah Tiffen, father born Beckwith Township, Lanark Co, Ontario, mother born Ireland. Informant is Mrs. Katherine Wall, wife, Trout Creek (Parry Sound Dist) # 028425-30. +++2. Isaac's second family with Margaret Shannon. - Mary Jane Wall, 1865 ïÿý 3/23/1889 No one before had found records on Mary Jane. She was born in 1865 at Matilda Twp, Dundas County, Ontario and named after Isaacïÿýs two Wall sisters; Mary and Jane. She married Robert Murdock on Feb. 23rd, 1886, Matilda Twp. and in a short time, developed consumption, the same disease that her mother died from. Mary Jane (Wall) Murdock died at home on March 23rd, 1889, seven years after her mother and three years after marrying. They had no children. Her death certificate is under her maiden name; Wall. She is buried with her mother at the Hanesville Cemetery, Dundas County. This is the first write up on her short life. Found: from Perth Courier Newspaper-March 28 1889-Local news- Mr. Isaac Wall, of Iowa, was visiting his son, Mr. Ephraim Wall, last week (at Merrickville). He came down to see a sick daughter, Mrs. Robert Murdock, of Burritt's Rapids*, and returned home on Saturday. He lived here (Montague Twp, Lanark Co) at one time but has not been here for 20 years (Isaac left Montague in 1864 for Dundas Co., Ontario). Mrs. Murdock died Sunday evening. (Mrs. Murdock, was Mary Jane Wall, Isaac's first child of his 2nd marriage, to Margaret Shannon. Isaac traveled by train from Jolley, Calhoun County, Iowa to Smith Falls, Ontario and then to Burrittïÿýs Rapids, to see his daughter one last time. This was a BIG long journey back then in 1889. Think about it. It must have taken several days, many stops, transfers and layovers. He probably traveled first to Chicago, then New York State somewhere and then went north into Canada.) *Burrittïÿýs Rapids is a small island community on the Rideau River. It is joined to the north by a stationary bridge and to the south by an old fashioned swing-bridge, which is operated by hand. The community straddles the river, so part is located in Rideau Township, now part of Ottawa, and part in North Grenville Township, Grenville County, Ontario. - William Francis Wall, 8/2/1867 - 5/9/1917 (Thereïÿýs that name again; William. He is Bonnie (Wall) Kinionïÿýs grandfather. It must be an important part of Isaacïÿýs family history but also Margaret Shannonïÿýs father was a William too). - George Eli Wall, 6/16/1869 - 11/4/1949. (He is Randy Wallïÿýs Great Grandfather.) - Twins: Eli Wall & Uretta Wall, only family records exist. - Sephrona Euretta Wall, 8/6/1875 - 1/26/1953. - Sam Milton Wall, 4/16/1878 - 6/30/1952. =++3. Isaac's third family with Mary Ann Johnson. - Ella Margaret Wall, 8/1/1883 - 4/27/1973. - Matilda (Prudie) Wall, 4/13/1885 - 4/14/1886. - Sara Jane Wall, 5/12/1887 - 12/23/1961. - Ida May Wall, 2/22/1890 - 3/24/1962. - Pearl Edith Wall, 12/13/1891 - 2/13/1985. Naming patterns-When researching your family tree, knowing a standard naming pattern for the children in a family might help you in confirming your family history. It helps to explain why similar names were common through various generations of families. Sons 1st son named after father's father 2nd son named after mother's father 3rd son named after father 4th son named after father's eldest brother 5th son named after mother's eldest brother Daughters 1st daughter named after mother's mother 2nd daughter named after father's mother 3rd daughter named after mother 4th daughter named after mother's eldest sister 5th daughter named after father's eldest sister If both grandfathers had the same name, then the second son could be named after the father. If a child died in infancy the name was often reused for the next child of the same gender. Wall children given names-So you can see the similarly in the names of the two brothers. Remember they lived side by side and of course if they both had a child in one given year; they would not name the children the same first name. It would be too confusing to have the same names for two WALL households, living by each other. Names of James & Ellen Wallïÿýs children: Ann, Mary, Henry, Ellen, Margaret, Susan, Jane, Rebecca, and Isaac (Isaac William). Names of Moses & Anne Wallïÿýs children: Jane, John, James, Maryanne, Maria, Henry, Elizabeth, Margaret, and William. |
