DOYLE : LEWIS : MORGAN : QUIN : SMITH

Query Text:

My ancestor Elizabeth LEWIS Smith was born c. 1770 in Orange County, NY, acc. to the 1850 census for Bath, Steuben County, NY. She had a strain of Native American ancestry; percentage unknown; anywhere from 1/2 to 1/8. There is an indication she may have had some German and/or Dutch ancestry. And British, if you go by the name Lewis, though that could have been translated from German or Dutch. She married Andrew Smith (1761-1837) born in Scotland, and family friend of Col.Charles Williamson in Scotland. Williamson was land agent for the Pulteney Estate in England, owner of vast tracts of lands in the Finger Lakes region and to the west of it. "Muckle" Andrew is a well known figure in the histories of Orange County, NY. ("Muckle" is Scots dialect for big and strong), as he was in the company of men headed by Williamson, who founded Bath, Steuben County, NY. in 1793. In the Steuben Co. histories and other sources it states that Andrew Smith and Elizabeth Lewis were married in 1795. In one note by a researcher it states they were married at the "OLd North Church"; no further info. given. There is an Old North Church in Sussex and Bergen Counties, NY; both counties adjoin Orange Co., NY. But from on-line info. for both churches, I find no such marriage; of course their information may be incomplete. I am posting this on YATES COUNTY SITE because I know there were Lewises there at an early date, and there is the possibility they were related to Elizabeth. If of any clue to a related Lewis family, her children's given names, all born in Bath and all surnamed SMITH, were (1). Charles A., born 1796, married Azilla Morgan (2). Maria, born 1799, married Dominick Quin. (3).John Johnson, born 1802, married Jane Rutherford. (4). Andrew, Jr. born 1806, married Maria Doyle (5). Nancy H., born 1809, married Andrew Smith (same name as her fathe!) (6). Elizabeth, born 1811, married James Rutherford. Any information, surmises, suggestions or help of any kind will be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jerry Brosious Minneapolis, Minnesota
