I am searching for any information regarding my third great-grandfather, George W. or G.W. KEY. I am assuming, but I am not certain that G.W. may stand for George Washington. G.W. KEY was born in Alabama My G-G-G-Grandfather was born 1825-27 in Alabama. He was not the son of William Pleasant and Elizabeth Mathews KEY who also had a son named George W. KEY who was also born in Alabama in 1825. The son of George Pleasant KEY died during the Civil War. I do not know where in Alabama that my George W. KEY was born, but three Federal Census reports list him being born in Alabama. I do not know who his parents were but, two Federal Census reports list both his parents as being born in Virginia. The first posible event I can identify in my George W's life is August 1860 or 1862 in Mississippi when he had a son, George Clemons (sometimes spelled Clemens or Clemmens). I don't know the name or age of the wife of George W. KEY and mother of George C. KEY. Differing later Census reports list the birth of George C. KEY in Mississippi as either 1860 or 1862 and they list the birthplace of his mother as either Arkansas or Mississippi. Of course, the fact that George C. KEY was born in Mississippi does not positively place my George W. KEY in that state. I cannot locate My George W. with any certainty on any Federal Census report prior to 1870 however, there is a G.W. J? KEY who was born in 1825 in Alabama listed on the 1850 Census of Tishomingo County, Mississippi. This is not my G.W. KEY because the Tishimingo KEY died prior to my G.W. George W. KEY was of an age to have served in the Civil War. I am assuming that he would have served with the Southern forces but, there was a George W. KEY who was from Mississippi and enlisted in the Union Army with the First Alabama Cavalry, United States Army. This was not my G.W. KEY because I traced that G.W. KEY back to Tishomingo County MS and his death preceded the death of my G.W. which occurred 11 Nov 1909. The next event I can identify in the life my George W. KEY is his marriage to Mrs. Mary Webb, the widow of Confederate soldier, Ellis Webb. This wedding took place in Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama in December of 1869. I am assuming that she was the second spouse of my George W. KEY I see both George W. and George C. KEY and step-mother Mary on the 1870 Federal Census, 3rd Sub Division, Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama. I see both Georges and step-mother Mary on the 1880 Federal Census, Township 4, Range 6, Jackson County, Alabama. I was puzzled why my George W. KEY might have migrated east from Mississippi to Alabama. Perhaps he was a single parent and was seeking the assistance of kinfolk. I researched the 1870 Census of Jackson County, Alabama to locate any KEY surnamed families. I located one, William P. KEY who was living in Township Four. The second wife of my George W. KEY, Mrs. Mary Webb, had lived in Township Four, Jackson County, AL on the 1860 Census and my George W. KEY and family relocated to Township Four on the 1880 Census. This seems to be too much of a coincidence. I suspect that my George W. KEY might have been related to William P. (Pleasant) KEY, but I do not know exactly how! The William Pleasant KEY who was born in Virginia in 1749-50 had multiple sons and a good portion of that family relocated to various Counties of Alabama such as Madison and Morgan. I am wondering if any of the sons of that William Pleasant KEY could have been related to or the father of my George W. KEY. Although no son recorded on OneWorldTree of Ancestry.com is listed as having produced a son named George W. (Except William Pleasant and Elizabeth Mathews KEY mentioned above), there are several sons of William Pleasant who do not have their progeny listed. As an example, there is one person on the 1830 Federal Census of Alabama, Madison County named Job KEY who is listed as having 2 sons under 5 which would fit the age of my George W. KEY. I am guessing that since this Job KEY was living so close to William and Robert KEY, that Job was actually John Jacob KEY! George C. KEY married Clementine WALTON, daughter of John “Jack” Fletcher WALTON and Lucinda ERWIN in Jackson County, Alabama between 1880 when he is enumerated as living with G.W. and Mary KEY and in 1882 when George C. and Clementine had their first child, Viola Priscilla who was born in Jackson County on 19 Dec 1882. George C. and Clementine WALTON KEY removed from Jackson County, AL to Tarrant County, Texas along with John “Jack” Fletcher WALTON and his entire family about 1884. George C. KEY along with Clementine and two daughters, Viola and Forthie (who was born 4 Jul 1884 in Tarrant County, Texas), eventually migrated to Ardmore, Oklahoma which was then Indian Territory. Forthie KEY married Pinkney CROW 8 Nov 1902 in Ardmore, Indian Territory (this was then Pickens County which no longer exists) and Viola KEY married George Perry BOWLING 21 Jul 1903 in Woodland, Indian Territory. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
