Trying to trace descendants of this family which lived on the Victorian goldfields, in Gippsland and later in other parts of the state: Samuel DAY/O'DAY (1838-1938) was born in Bothwell Tasmania (Parents not confirmed), and came to Victoria in the 1850s. In 1872, he married Mary WARD of Melbourne (1856-1940). They had 14 children: 7 born in Eddington in the goldfields area, and registered as DAY, followed by 7 born in Gippsland, registered with the surname O'DAY. Samuel died in Carisbrook, and Mary died in Brunswick. They are buried as O'DAY, so as Samuel decided to change his name from DAY to O'DAY in about 1887, it is assumed that this was the original family name, probably with Irish origins. Their children were: B1. Samuel DAY (1872-1958); B2. George Herbert DAY (1874-1910); B3. Albert Joseph DAY (1877-1973); B4. John DAY/ O'DAY (1878-...); B5. Mary Anne Josephine DAY (1880-1970) - married Alexander M. LAWSON; B6. Margaret/Sarah Jane DAY (1882-1972) - married Frederick James FIELD; B7. William Henry DAY (1885-1889); B8. Joseph O'DAY (1887-...); B9. Michael Herbert O'DAY (1890-...); B10. Robert James O'DAY (1892-1917) - killed in Belgium, WW1; B11. Maude Louisa Dorothy O'DAY (1893-1982) - married Leslie GREENING; B12. Leslie Ernest O'DAY (1895-1962); B13. Annie Georgina Victoria O'DAY (1897-1933) - married .? . BOURKE; B14. Myrtle Wilhemena O'DAY (1899-1980) Love to hear from you if you think we may have a connection. I have no information about the descendants of many of these children and would love to know more.
