Maria Dorothea KUNKEL, b. 10 June 1848 in Malstatt, Saarbruecken, Rhineland, Prussia. Her parents were Friedrich KUNKEL and Dorothea HORN. Maria married Friedrich GRAEBEL/GRABEL in 1867 Germany. "Fred" was born between 1845-1849 in Bavaria (Bayern) Germany...as were his parents. Per the 1880 census, Fred's occupation was an engineer at the Pittsburgh Iron Works. Their first born son, Fred J. GRAEBEL was born April 1868 in Zweibruecken, Germany (per Pittsburgh marriage returns on 4 June 1891 to Eliza FREESE) The family immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I've found a possible passenger record for them; listed as Franz, Maria, and FRANZ GRUBLE, arriving in New York, New York on 1 Feb 1872. There were three more children born in Pittsbugh. August Joseph GRAEBEL (b. 20 Oct 1873) Catherine Louise GRABEL(b. 3 March 1875) and Margaret Anna GRABEL (b. 3 Jan 1880) The 1881/1882 Pittsburgh city directory listed Maria GRABEL as a widow of Fredk, living at 104 Painter's Row, West Carson. I have as yet, to find "Fred's" death date or a burial record. It's most likely in an old Pittsburgh German newspaper, of which I cannot read. Son, Fred J. GRABEL died 15 Dec 1899 from bright's (kidney) disease. He was only 31 years old! He was listed in the city directory as a policeman in 1898. Maria D. GRABEL, daughter Margaret HILDEBRAND, daughter Catherine BLACK, and son Fred GRABEL are buried in Chartiers Cemetery, Pittsburgh; along with many other family members. August GRABEL married Mary Jane SCAIFE in 1895 Pittsburgh, the daughter of Thomas SCAIFE, born in ENGLAND. August GRABEL died 15 March 1923 in Akron, Ohio.
