Query Text: |
My father was Frank R. O’Donnell, born in Racine, Wisconsin April 16, 1894 to Neil J. and Martha O’Donnell (nee Rowan or Roughan). Neil J. O’Donnell and Martha Rowan were married in Racine, WI at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church (I believe) on August 18, 1891. Neil J. and Martha O’Donnell lived for many years at 1922 Erie Street in Racine. My Grandfather Neil J. O’Donnell was born in Ireland (believed to be County Donegal, but city/village unknown) on April 15, 1863. He died in Racine, WI on January 27, 1942. According to his death certificate his father’s name was Neil and his mother was Bridget (nee Mullen) O’Donnell. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Racine. My Great Grandmother Bridget O’Donnell (nee Mullen), mother of Neil J. was born in Ireland, village/city/county unknown as is the year of her birth. She died in the Chicago, Illinois, May 14, 1914, I have a non certified copy of her death certificate that certificate lists her father as John Mullen and her mother as Catherine McCarthy, both born in Ireland. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Racine, WI. While the death certificate says Bridget was 68, it appears questionable, it would mean she was born in 1846 and had a son at age 17. The 1880 U. S. Census lists her at 40 years old which would make her year of birth as 1840. I can find no information about Bridget’s husband, other than his name was Neil. In the Racine, Wisconsin City Directories around 1880 she lists herself as a widow. She immigrated to the U. S. in 1870s, perhaps 1874. The assumption is that she was a widow when she arrived in the U. S.; I have no sound basis for this, just an assumption. John Mullen. The Racine Directories and the 1880 Census also show a John Mullen (assumed to be Bridget’s widowed father), which lists him as “Father,” living at the same address as Bridget O’Donnell. According to the 1880 Census he was born in 1798 in Ireland; he died in Racine, Wisconsin on March 3, 1891. Another John Mullen. The Racine City Directory also listed another John Mullen, born in 1850 in Ireland. He died in 1900 in Racine and the Registration of Deaths lists his father as John Mullen and his mother as Catherine Mullen (Bridget’s certificate lists her mother as Catherine McCarthy). Logic dictates this is Bridget’s brother and John (the elder’s) son. Mary Donegan (nee O’Donnell), sister of Neil J. O’Donnell and daughter of Bridget O’Donnell was born in Ireland (also believed to be County Donegal, but city/village unknown) on October 6, 1868. She died in Racine, WI on June 15, 1951 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Racine. Her Death Certificate which lists the same information as Neil J.’s certificate, i.e., father Neil, mother Bridget (nee Mullen) O’Donnell. According to the 1910 Census, Neil J. O’Donnell immigrated to the U.S. in 1880, yet other census indicate he immigrated around 1874, so a little confusing. I don’t have any information about where his parent(s) first settled, if they went directly to Racine, nor do I have any passenger list information. Any information or suggestions about these O’Donnells and Mullens would be appreciated. Richard O’Donnell rtodonn@aol.com | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
