A twenty year old girl admitted herself to Sarasota Memorial on September 20, 1978 and stated she was in labor. At 7:04 pm, on the 20th, she gave birth to a 7lb, 11 oz baby girl. The mother was described as being 5'2" tall of medium weight and blond hair. She indicated that she had a fight with her husband and left him. She gave her residence as being in Atlanta, Georgia. Her roommate in the hospital later stated that the mother seemed familiar with the Sarasota area, which led the roommate to believe that she was not a transient, as claimed. The mother stated that she was born in Kentucky. On September 22, 1978, the mother put on her bathrobe, took her purse and mentioned she was going to take a shower. She never returned to her room. The hospital attempted to locate her at the given address in Atlanta. The baby was picked up from the hospital on September 25, 1978, by John and Holly Instone, foster parents in Sarasota. She remained there until March 14, 1979, when seh was placed with her adoptive parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Hopton (now deceased). Attempts were made by the agency to locate the mother of this child, but a letter sent to the address in Atlanta was returned stamped "no such address". To date, neither the mother nor father has been heard from. The child and her adoptive family lived in Sebring, Florida. The child was given the name Joyce by her foster family and her name was later changed to Sarah-Beth.
