Query Text:

My birth mother was named Carol Foster when she gave birth to me at age 16. She lived in the area of Burlington Iowa in Des Moines county. I was born on May 7 1956. It was a private adoption arranged through the police matron-Ruth Paule- in Burlington who was helping her and arranged a place for her to stay with the John & Mary's family (01/26/56 to 03/08/56) as Mary was Ruth Paule's niece. She stayed two other homes during the pregnancy. Her alias at the hospital and in the Lee County birth record book was Sally Parker. She used this alias when she wrote a letter to my parents after the adoption was final on May 20th 1957. The doctor, the judge, the lawyer and the police matron are all deceased now. She later got married and had 3 or 4 children is my understanding. An unknown woman brought my mother to Ruth Paule. When Mrs. Paule and her husband went on vacation April 21 the same woman stayed with her at the Paule home to take care of birth mother during the last few weeks. I have also called and checked the birth records for several counties again today thinking a Carol Foster might show in 1939-1941 and thus far-again I am not locating her. I have checked 6 counties (Lee Des Moines Louisa Muscatine and Henry in Iowa and one-Henderson County in Illinois. On one bill from the attorney also has a Gen. Gallbrath owed $10. This is an unknown name to me so I called the Iowa National Guard Records office at Camp Dodge in Johnston Iowa and they could not locate this name in the archives. I thought maybe that was a general who helped my birth father get to see me in the hospital. I have nothing else showing this name. An archivist at the State Historical Society is searching this name for me in their military records also. He expects to contact me within a week from today. Ruth Paule lived at 810 North 5th st. and Walter was her husband. Ruth and the judge died in a car accident shortly after my adoption-still in the 50s. My attorney died in 1980 and the doctor died last year but I had gathered all of the info I could from him. Checked atty records with his surviving cousin who is an atty. Ruth Paule's brother was the father to Mary. I called Mary-age 79 now and spoke with her today. She was so sweet-she recalls my birth mother and that she had red hair and was "excellent" and very nice with no health problems in the pregnancy/ She cannot however recall my mother's name or where she was from. She asked for my number and said she would be glad to notify if she remembers more. I opened the conversation by asking her if she had been related to Ruth Paule and she described the relationship. Mary also did not think that Carol or Sally sounded right for her name but she is visiting with her sons about this. Mary would have been approx 26 when my mother stayed with them from January to March of 1956. She also could not remember the name of the lady who took my mother to Mrs. Paule. A funny part of the story is that- One of Mrs.. Paule's nieces was dating a man who rented a room from the older couple on the corner from my parents. She mentioned the baby being expected and the couple knew my parents and the adoption was planned over a bridge game! The name Sally mentioned above was the alias-Sally Parker-that birth mother used while in the hospital and on the letter she went to my parents after the adoption was final May 20, 1957.
