Joseph Bray Born England with conflicts as to year and place described below. 1900 Wright co., vernon twp. under citizenship says 1869 31 and "looks like" na under naturalization. According to his obit, Joseph Bray was born Sept 28, 1840 but in the 1900 census it says Sept 1841. (1880 Lincoln Twp, Black Hawk County Iowa says 1842.) He died February 1906 Galt, Iowa. According to his obit Joseph left his home and family at about age 25 and immigrated to the US settling in Black Hawk county and married there in 1873, it does NOT say what year he went to Black Hawk County Iowa. We have NOT as yet found him in the 1870 census so don't know where he was in 1870, speculate that though the obit said he left his home and family he most likely had family in the US as well, Uncle, Brother, someone, maybe WI, MN, ILL, MI? (His wife's family was in ILL.) I've been given to understand that in order to be naturalized in 1869 he was in the country probably five years prior? Have not found papers of intent, no idea where to look. Would assume since in 1900 he had been in the US 31 years if I'm interpreting that right ? then he might have been naturalized say 1874 or some before or after? Married Alice Marie Beckwith Oct 29, 1873 Lincoln Twp., Black Hawk Co. IA at Brides Father's. (Horace Beckwith) 1880 census Lincoln Twp, Black Hawk County, IA 1900 Vernon Twp., Wright Co., IA 1885 Clarion Twp., Wright Co, IA 1905 P.O. Galt, Blaine Twp, Wright Co. IA died 1906 Feb. 11 children, all born Iowa, my Grandmother we knew as Beulah Marie (since have found her only as Marie B.) was the youngest and was less than 2 months of age when her Mother Alice died Dec 8 1892. Alice was daughter of Horace and Prudence (nee Collins) Beckwith and was b. ILL Alice, Joseph, a son William H. and what we assume to be Wife of William H. (Mattie Bauge Bray) are all buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Dows, Wright county, Iowa though some of Dows is in Wright county and some in Franklin county Iowa. I have not been able to find exact birthplace of Joseph in England so am searching to find who his parents and possible/probable siblings are. Obituary says born Wallhurst England, a daughters birth record says born Woodbridge and Found by Wright county genealogy society lookup person..and I quote "I find in my book", Ancient Parish registers Woodbridge in Suffolk County with records starting in 1545. The only Woodbridge parish." Have not been able to establish exact place I have found something now on all the children of Joseph and Alice Beckwith Bray. My Grandmother is mentioned in Obituaries of siblings and also in her Father's obituary where two of the 11 children were referred to by name as Miss Carrie Whitten (small town in Iowa) and Miss Marie Marshalltown and said that all 11 children were there to mourn. Since my Grandmother and apparently some of the others as well were raised by others but obviously were kept in contact as indicated by their Fathers obituary it was quite a search to put this family together this far. My Grandmother was adopted, ? if formally or informally by Alfred and Lillie nee Hadley Ware. When they were expecting their firstborn son Grandma then went to live with Lillie's parents, William Jasper and Mary I nee Carpenter Hadley. She's found in the 1900 Cedar County IA census with them as Gdaughter, Marie B. Ware age 7. Hope to connect with someone to further this history by adding parents and siblings for Joseph.
