I have a great uncle who moved to Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas between 1870 and 1880 from Cherokee Co. TX. His name was William Edward Smith b. Jun 8, 1847 in Knox Co. TN, moved to TX with his family in 1850. Was last listed on the 1870 Cherokee Co. TX census and next appeared on the 1880 Garland Co. Arkansas census as a teacher. He never married. He was also listed in later censuses as a farmer. In the late 1920's William was moved back to TX (Smith Co.) by a niece where she took care of him until he died Jan 31, 1929. I would like to find any information that would tell me something about his life in Arkansas. Would there be any info. on early schools or school teachers? There was mention in his obituary that he had prospected for gold also. Does Arkansas have any history on gold prospecting? I would like to know what brought William to Arkansas as there was no family there. Any little bit of info. would be greatly appreciated in learning about our Uncle William.
