A group of Durrett Researchers has formed the DURRETT DNA Project to help participants connect back to their early DURRETT Ancestors who were French Huguenots. Our DURRETT ancestors left France for a better life for themselves and their families. They first arrived in England before coming to the America’s in the early 1600s to late 1700s and settling in parts of Virginia, USA; and some were slave owners. Here are a few of the names we have found in early records of Virginia; John, Bartholomew, Richard, Francis, Phillip and William DURRETT. It is unknown how Francis, Phillip and William are related to John, Bartholomew and Richard DURRETT, who were brothers. Only through DNA can we unravel this mystery of our DURRETT ancestors. OUR groups’ goal is to find our common ancestors and to meet new cousins here in the USA and around the World. All Y-DNA tests allow the participant to identify his ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant on your direct male descending line (depending on the test taken). The DURRETT Surname DNA Project is continuously seeking other DURRETT male researchers, or female researchers who have a living male father, brothers, grandfathers, uncles or sons, grandsons, cousins…etc. who are surnamed DURRETT, or male children of biological father surnamed DURRETT, to become part of our growing project. “This test will also check for Native American and African American Ancestry” (information taken from Family Tree DNA website). The Group has no agenda other than to further research and hopefully connect participants to other relatives researching the same DURRETT bloodline. There is no monetary gain for anyone in the group. The well-discounted lab fee goes 100% to the service provider, in our case, Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com). DNA testing will never replace diligent research of existing public records i.e. land deeds, marriage records, wills, census, family Bibles, and interviewing living family members. However, the testing process will identify whether or not participants are biologically related to other participants within the group, within a 99.9% probability. The Y-Chromosome in male DNA is passed from father to son and is virtually unchanged over a period exceeding 500 years, and is the basis of the Male DURRETT Surname DNA Project. It is our hope to help participants find relatives they didn’t know they had through DNA testing. The process is very confidential and safe, and only email addresses are shared between matching participants. “Results are placed in Family Tree DNA’s Y-DNA database and when 2 people show the same identical or near identical results, Family Tree DNA will inform both parties if you have both signed the FTDNA Release Form” (information taken from Family Tree DNA website) The DNA sample collection process uses a simple, painless, bloodless, mouth swab with a little swab that looks like a cross between a cotton swab and a mini-toothbrush. Please check out the DURRETT DNA Projects Group's website at World Families World Families Durrett DNA Project or our website at Family Tree DNA Family Tree Durrett DNA Project managed by our Group Administrator Joy Durrett, who is an unpaid volunteer. Many in our group have been researching their DURRETT surname for many years and are looking for connections to their common DURRETT Male line. We hope you will join us in this project. Everyone is welcome to post their DURRETT line on our patriarchs page. Which is located at (You will need both lines) http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/d/durrett/pats.html If you have any questions, please email our group administrator anytime.
