Misc Notes On My Search for My John and Samuel Poston in SC. Poston Surname Misc. Notes: By Ann G. in Lockhart Texas....Most of my notes have been sent to me in message boards, emails, regular mail, and from documents of my ancestors, also I spent yrs going to the Historical Society in Darlington County, SC and Chesterfield County, SC. Not to mention the cemetaries I dragged my family to. I hope some of my notes will help others in their search. Note: Need any and all help trying to find our Samual Poston born about 1756 - 1774 below., father of our John Poston in ?SC. Any and all help highly appreciated. 1625/1825 The Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, 1625 to 1825 by David Dobson, Volume 1, lists the following early Douglas settlers in North America. Douglas, Alexander. 46. Farmer. Born in Scotland. Wife Catherine 46, born in North Carolina: Hugh, aged 14; Mary aged 11; Archibald, aged 9; Sarah, aged 11. Mentions also Nancy Poston, aged 55, born in North Carolina. Chesterfield County, South, Carolina. England 1630 Johannes Poston born 1630 married Maria (Walker) 28 March 1663 at Church Stretton they lived in Downton Hereford and had Guiliemi (William) Poston 8 August 1660 Note: John/Johannes POSTON who married Maria (Walker) in Church Stretton Shropshire in 1663. He had three children Gulielmi/William, Margaret and Mary. William married Martha Browne (Eveline). England 1660 Guiliemi (William) Poston 8 August 1660 who married Martha (Brown) on 15 June 1685 they lived in Middleton Hereford and had six children William (28 June 1686) Thomas (18 December 1687) Henry (1 May 1690) Johannes (23 August 1691) Martha (10 Sept 1692)and Joanna (22 May 1694) who married John Bayliss 4 August 1720. Joanna died on 6 November 1767.. 1676 NOTE: Going back to the two Johns I have an entry which states that Johannes Poston married Maria (?) 11 October 1676 at Middleton on the Hill (maybe John and Mary you know?) NOTE: Could one of the original Johns be their son born 1686 who emigrated to America, went on to have another John Poston who married Pricilla and had a son Samuel Poston etc.etc. Maryland 1632 CHARTER OF MARYLAND. June 20, 1632. PATENT ROLL 8 CHARLES I. Part 3, No. 2594. IN PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE, LONDON INDEX TO NAMES OF PERSONS AND PLACES. Anketill, Francis, 187, 424. Baldridge, Mrs., 178. / Anne Arundel (Anne Arundell, Ann Baldridge, James, 6r, 179. / Arunclell, An Arundell), 325, 348, 349, Baldridge, Lieut. Maryland 1656/1668 I am searching for information on Thomas Hunt, b c.1668, who may have been an immigrant (Gust Skordas of MD notes five Thomas Hunts transported to Maryland between 1656 and 1668) or he may have been a son of that Thomas Hunt who apparently married Elizabeth James in St. Mary's Co., MD, and whose nuncupative will was probated 10 Jan. 1675. He was probably related to Alice Hunt who was the mother of Mary Hunt born in Charles County 2 days before Easter 1665. Alice Hunt married in Charles County 21 Nov 1666 Garrett Sinnot (Sinnott); their daughter Margaret Sinnott was born in Charles County 24 Oct 1667. He may also have been related to John Hunt of Calvert Co., MD, who died in 1703. The wife of Thomas Hunt was named Anna. She may have been related to or surnamed Love or Poston/Posten, but evidence is lacking. Thomas Hunt's will was dated in Charles County 21 Apr 1734 and admitted to probate 16 May 1734. He bequeathed 100 acres "Hunt's Venture", his dwelling plantation, to his wife. Any information will be appreciated. England 1660 Guiliemi (William) Poston 8 August 1660 who married Martha (Brown) on 15 June 1685 they lived in Middleton Hereford and had six children 1. William Poston 28 June 1686 , 2. Father John Poston NC 1762 Jonathan Poston and Mary (?) Poston lived in NC in the 1760s, because a deed dated 1769 shows that they sold 101 acres of land in Rowan Co., NC. This is the same land which Jonathan (no wife's name given) bought in 1762 NOTE: ******NC 1760s Note: Samuel. However, after Colin James' book was published, a page from a very old Poston Bible was found, which lists Samuel's parents as Jonathan and Mary Poston. This information requires a revision in the lineage given in James' book. One logical conclusion is that there was another generation in the line, and that Jonathan was the son of John, Jr., and Priscilla. Clearly, the abundance of men named John in the Poston family makes it very difficult to separate the generations and prove the relationships. We may assume that Jonathan and Mary Poston lived in NC in the 1760s, because a deed dated 1769 shows that they sold 101 acres of land in Rowan Co., NC. This is the same land which Jonathan (no wife's name given) bought in 1762. According to the page from the Bible, Samuel was born 8 Oct 1765. He married Rachel King, and they had seven children, including John Poston, father of Sarah Poston London. and Rachel's in 1853. England and Maryland 1686 John Poston is that he was born about 1686 in Northumberland, London, England married Mrs.Susanna (?) Then his son Francis Poston was born 1715, died 4/1777 and married 1735 but I don't have his wifes name (?). In the book "Elias B. Poston and His Ancestors," E. O. and G. L. James wrote that he probably married no later than 1712. They also wrote, "We have searched in vain for the marriage record among Maryland documents." John Poston was 17 when he came to America in 1703, bound to Henry Brown. I believe your information probably came from the book I quoted, which was published in 1942. The Colin James book, "A Poston Family Genealogy John Hamill Poston, 1786-1848," was published in 1959. In it is stated correctly what is shown in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register that John Poston came, not from Northumberland, but from "off Shrewesberry," which is in Shropshire. I'm not sure of the relationship between E. O., G. L., and Colin James, but some of the Colin James statements are almost direct quotes from the earlier book. Maybe I mis-read G. L. and it should have been C. L., for Colin. Someone on this forum can probably answer that. I did not copy pages about Francis from the E. O. and G. L. James book, but I'm sure they follow that line on because of this statement on page 7: "To quicken your interest, Francis Poston , the third son named in the will, was our ancestor; he was the grandfather of Elias B. Poston." If you have not seen that book, I feel sure you could learn more from it. England and Maryland 1703 A John Poston sailed from Liverpool, England 26 april 1703, he was from in or near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and landed in St Marys County, Maryland. Pa. 1705 ? She was born 1719 in Belfast, Ireland, and died 1766 in Little Britain, Penn NOTE: I have several Poston families living in Shropshire from the 1600's (just in passing Shropshire was also sometimes referred to as Salop) anyway I digress. I will list the towns I have together with the Christian names of the males below and you will notice that certain areas and families tend to stick to their own line of Christian names thus:- 1. Church Stretton line: Samuel, John, Richard, Edward, Robert, William and I have one only Elisha. 2. Wrockwardine and Winstanstowe line: Edward, William, Thomas, John, Samuel, George, Charles, Robert, Richard and I have only one Randolf. 3. There is also a line in Herefordshire at Middleton on the Hill: Guiliemi (William), Johannes (John), Thomas, Richard, Samuel, Henricus (Henry), Thomas and Charles. 4. I also have Postons in Staffordshire (before boundary changes which put the following towns in the now West Midlands). 5. Tipton: Thomas, Richard, John, Joseph. 6. Walsall: Edward 7. Dudley: Samuel 8. Kidderminster: Thomas, Samuel and Caroline. ******Note: Can anyone tell me anything at all on all the above Samual Poston's ??????? Va., NC and SC 1775 Sarah Poston London's ancestry is well documented. Her maternal line traces back to Robert and Sarah (maiden name unknown) Patterson of York Co., SC. It is unknown whether or not Robert Poston was the immigrant. His will, was written in 1775 and recorded in York Co. in 1791, mentions land which he owned in "the Province of Virginia," but it is not known if he lived in another state before that. One child named in the will is 1. Robert Poston , who was born circa 1775, moved to Rutherford Co., NC, and thence to McMinn Co., TN, where he died. His will was probated on 7 Jan 1828 in McMinn Co. Robert's wife was Mabel (?), . Robert and Mabel's daughter, Mabel Poston , was born in NC, probably Rutherford Co., on 11 Dec 1796. She married John Poston, born 31 Dec 1797, and they remained in the part of Rutherford Co. that became Cleveland Co. John Poston and Mabel (Patterson) Poston were the parents of Sarah Poston London. John Poston died 20 Oct 1862, and Mabel died 14 Jan 1884. They are buried with some of their children and grandchildren in the Poston Cemetery on Highway 226 in Cleveland Co. Elizabeth (Patterson), sister of Mabel (Patterson) and therefore aunt of Sarah (Poston) London, married Isom Julian in Rutherford Co., NC. They eventually settled in Bradley Co. The earliest known ancestor of Sarah Poston London through her father, John Poston, is the immigrant, John Poston, who came to America in 1703 from Shropshire Co., England. At that time John Poston was 17 years old and was bound to a Henry Brown. John Poston settled in Maryland and reared a large family. According to Colin James, author of A Poston Family Genealogy, published in 1959, John, Poston Jr., son of the immigrant, moved to NC. His wife's name was Priscilla (?) , and they had 4 sons, one of whom was named Samuel.
