Query Text:

I am looking for the origin of a Judson/H.Judd/Judson B. Smith. He was born in either PA or NY in Nov.1854, his father's name was supposedly Samuel A. Smith from NY or VT (not sure of his birth/death) who married a Matilda Barnes(school teacher) b.1828 from either PA or NY.(The previous info came by way of a book called "The Barnes Genealogy" written by a Rev. Barnes in 1903. I was only able to glance @ it while an older relative who had it was visiting. This is my only source of info).I have found poor Matilda Barnes in some Pa. Census working as a weaver & a domestic servant, this is after her 40's. She is also living w/a Rodny Smith & his wife Eliza J in Girard, Erie Co.,Pa in the 1880 census, she is abt. 53, & they are not listed as family members; Rodney is in his 70's & a retired grocer.I find this odd because she had supposedly been married to a Sam Smith. There were other Barnes family members living in this same area (about 10 miles away) @ this time, & she is never listed w/any of them, she is always alone or w/the Smith's I just mentioned. It is almost as if she had been shunned. Judson was married to my gr-grandmother, Minne Chapman from Elk Creek, Pa. They are listed as being married in Coraopolis Pa. in the Barnes book. They had many children, born in various states because Judson was a traveling salesman, Singer sewing machines & whatnot. Also, Judson was said to have been adopted & bonded out to a Mr. Shandrew of NY state, I am not sure how old he was when this occurred, but he was young, I don't know who Mr. Shandrew was or where he lived in NY. All of this was told to me by my grandma Kate Sturgeon-Smith-Hoover, who was married to Judson's son,my grandpa, Samuel Maitland Smith b.July 3, 1887, Rochester,NY d. Oct.20,1958 in Cranesville,Pa. Kate died recently,Feb,2003. Judson also had a younger brother, Hiram Arthur Smith, b. in 1857 in NY/PA. Judson was considered a shuyster by the family & by the newpapers. I did find one mention of him, I think, in a Pittsburgh area paper around the late 1890's, & his occupation was literally listed as Shuyster. Judson got a woman pregnant on his travels while in the Pittsburgh Pa. area, & my gr-grandmother Minnie kicked him out & he moved to that area for good I think. I believe he had @ least one son,Earl Smith b.1895, & a girl too. Family members were acquainted w/Earl, who died in the 1970's in Florida, & his son Jerry. Everyone who knows of these people are now gone. I would love to know where & who Judson married/had children with in the Pittsburgh area. Maybe he even had more families, I don't know. I am the family genealogist, & I am having a heck of a time finding Judson or his father Samuel. And I still do not understand the Mr. Shandrew thing. Could he have been Judson's real father? I have attached a photo of Judson Smith, his wife Minnie Chapman, their daughter Minnie Evelyn Smith, & the baby boy is either Robert or Harry. My Grandpa Sam Smith isn't in the pic, cause he hadn't been born yet. If any of this sounds familiar, or these people look familiar, oh please contact me asap. Thanks, Sheri P.
