My paternal great grandfather Samuel James McKenrick was 16 when President Lincoln went to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and delivered his now famous address at the dedication of the cemetery following the Civil War Battle there. "Sam" hiked the 13 or 14 miles into Gettysburg from the family farm in the Buchanan Valley, Menallen Township, Adams County. He gained access to the President who was staying with Attorney (later Judge) David Wills because David Wills was his cousin. I've been unable to document the connection between the Wills and McKenrick families. Samuel James McKenrick was born 26 July 1847 in Menallen Township, married 7 December 1871 to Barbara Ann Cole and died 6 March 1941 in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Sam's father was Charles McKenrick, born 1 May 1818 in Menallen Township, married 3 November 1841 to Barbara Ann Cole, and died 3 April 1892 in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Sam's mother was Barbara Ann Cole, born 4 December 1824 in Berkenour, Hesse-Darmstadt, Prussia, Germany, died 1 April 1907 in Carlisle, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. David Wills was born 3 February 1831 in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, married 19 June 1856 to Catherine Jane Smyser, and died 27 October 1894. David's father was James J. Wills, a farmer, born about 1802 in Pennsylvania. David's mother was Ruth Wilson, born 7 January 1804 in Adams County, Pennsylvania, died 3 June 1836 in Gettysburg. David's siblings were Ruth born about 1835 who married William Walhay of Benderville, Pennsylvania. David also had a brother John. I have much on David's maternal ancestral line but little on the paternal side. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
