Asmus Researching Asmus. My great grandfather Carl Asmus who was born in Wismar-Mecklenberg Germany in 1832 came to USA (settled in New Lenox, Illinois) in 1861. Had several brothers who came over approximately 1862-1865 as did his father Christian and mother Maria. One of his brothers was John. A John Asmus appears in the 1870 Scott County census at the age of 29. 29 would be the correct age for John if he was in fact Carl's brother.
