My ggg grandfather (William H. Smith)left a transcript of some of his life. Said he was born in 1819 in Jefferson County in Smithfield, Va. His father was Henry Smith, a shoe maker, but changed his trade after a while. The town was 15 miles from the Shennadoah river where he was learning the milling business from his brother-in-law, George F. Ludwig. Query - Smithfield does not seem to exist in name today.
