Query Text:

I am trying to find a copy of the first Powell History, an account of the lives of the Powell pioneers of 1851... written by James Madison Powell M.D. 1922. I descend from John Alkire Powell, one of the three brothers who settled in Oregon. My lineage is as follows: John Alkire Powell /Savilla Smith Powell Franklin Smith Powell/Louise Jane Peeler John Harden Powell/Anna Baltimore Garrett Powell Delbert Wayne Powell/Ethel Hurley Powell Edgar Delbert Powell/ Virginia Elliott Powell Wendi Powell Roehrig (Me) My father always said that one of our Powell ancestors married a woman that was part Native American in the Pacific Northwest or Canada. He said it was written in the first book. My dad said that the last time he remembers seeing that book was at his parents' house before he went off to WWII. We have the 1977 edition that mentions nothing about a Powell marrying someone of Native American Ancestry evidently having something to do with the Hudson Bay Co. I have never found anything to suggest anything of the sort. My dad, to this day, insists that this is fact but my aunt, insists it is not so. To answer one question, I recently had an ancestral DNA test indicating that I indeed have 7% NA blood. It is definitely not from my mom's side. There are some years in the life of my great grandfather, John Harden Powell that can't be accounted for in the 1977 edition of the book or any sort of census records on line. I know that my great grandmother, Annie Baltimore Garrett had been married before she married my great grandfather. I can't find any information on her first husband, not even his first name. In all the records of my grandfather's marriage to her, they are only listed as having one son named, Archie. Family records show that this one son Archie was the youngest of three. There was an older sister, Zora and older brother, Delbert, my grandfather. John Harden Powell, Annie Baltimore and Delbert Powell were all born in Linn County and eventually ended up in Spokane, Wa. I would appreciate any information regarding my family or access to that first Powell History book. I am really having a hard time trying to fit the puzzle together and I'd really like to do it for my dad who is in his 80's. Thank you. Wendi Powell Roehrig
